Common dengue symptoms
Symptoms usually begin 4 to 10 days after a bite from an Aedes mosquito carrying the dengue virus, and last 2 to 7 days.
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache and pain behind the eyes
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Skin rash
- Feeling extremely tired
These symptoms look like influenza and other fevers. That's why a blood test matters to confirm the diagnosis, and why self-diagnosis isn't advised.
The critical phase: when the fever starts to drop
A falling fever doesn't necessarily mean you've recovered. Dengue warning signs often appear after the fever settles. This is the most important time to stay alert and see a doctor for monitoring.
Warning signs: go to hospital immediately
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain
- Persistent vomiting
- Bleeding from the nose or gums
- Blood in vomit or stool
- Fast breathing
- Restlessness or unusual tiredness
- Pale or cold skin
- Feeling very weak or very thirsty
Care at home
- Drink enough fluids: plain water or oral rehydration solution. Watch for signs of dehydration such as passing less urine, dry mouth, dizziness or unusual drowsiness.
- For fever and pain, use paracetamol at the correct dose. Don't take more than one paracetamol-containing medicine at the same time.
- Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAID painkillers as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
- See a doctor if you have other illnesses, take other medicines or aren't sure.
